Decomposed body found in Preble

Preble County investigators are awaiting a report from a forensic anthropologist, hoping it provides details leading to the identity of a decomposed body found Friday, July 18.

The Preble County Sheriff's Office is investigating the discovery of the skeletal remains Friday afternoon, in the 7000 block of Lexington-Salem Road, northeast of West Alexandria. According to reports, two subjects looking for scrap metal discovered the body on an unoccupied property around noon.

Detectives believe the body to be that of a male. The victim, according to Sheriff Mike Simpson, appears to have been wearing "flip-flop"-type shoes as well as Chaps blue jeans.

At press time, it was unknown how long the body had been on the property.

"We're dealing with just bones," Coroner's Investigator David Lindloff said Monday morning, July 21.

Detectives spent Friday afternoon searching the area for evidence and recovering the body, after securing a search warrant for the property, according to Simpson.

Deputies are currently handling the investigation as a homicide.

Lindloff said an anthropologist was set to examine the remains on Monday, at the Montgomery County Coroner's Office in Dayton, to where the remains were removed.

Detectives were assisted at the scene by the Montgomery County Regional Crime Lab, and the case is under investigation by the PCSO and the PC Coroner's Office.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have information regarding a missing person who may have had clothing matching the description to contact the PCSO at (937) 456-6262.

As of Monday, Lindloff said there had been no calls regarding missing persons from Preble County.

"We're small," Lindloff said of Preble County, "and we're frequented by people from Dayton and other areas."

After the forensic examination, officials hope to have more details to release which may help identify the victim.

"Then we'll go from there," Lindloff said.

Preble County police offer more clues about body

Body found in Preble Co. field is white male with heart stent

PALLADIUM-ITEM • July 23, 2008

The Preble County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday released additional information about a decomposed body discovered Friday.

The body of a man found northeast of West Alexandria in the 700 block of Lexington-Salem Road was so badly decomposed that Preble County detectives are asking anyone who may have information regarding a missing person to contact the sheriff's office.
Detectives for now are investigating the incident as a homicide.
The body initially described by a Preble County investigator as "basically, bones is what we found and some clothing," was found with flip-flops and blue Chaps-brand jeans. Two men found the body while looking for scrap metal on abandoned farmland.
A release from the sheriff's office states the body was of a white male, late middle aged, between 5 feet 10 inches and 6-3 and more than 200 pounds.
The victim had a heart stent, crowns on at least two teeth and a size 2X T-shirt, red/orange in color.
The preliminary examination indicates a time of death between fall 2007 and spring 2008.
A forensic anthropologist at the Montgomery County Coroner's Office compiled the information. Tissue was recovered for a DNA analysis.
Contact the Preble County Sheriff's Office with information, (937) 456-6262.
