The search for a missing man from Jasper has intensified following the discovery of blood inside his truck.

58 year old Martin Lynn Byerly of Jasper was last seen on Friday, September 28.

Byerly's truck is providing evidence that police hope will put them closer to finding the missing man.

Friday, Jasper police dusted Martin Byerly's Chevy truck and conducted tests, looking for evidence to help them figure out what happened to him.

"We're continuing to collect evidence from the vehicle," said Jasper Police Chief Todd Hunter. "Much of that evidence is being analyzed."

A Jasper police officer was in the sally port of the police department, trying to find a full print on the truck. It has been treated as a crime scene since police impounded the vehicle.

Byerly was last seen at a tavern, Jake's Place, near Highway 96, late in the evening on Friday, September 30.

The owners said they don't know Byerly well, but told us he's a regular customer and a charter member of Jake's Place.

A Jasper police officer spotted the truck at a Payless Shoe Store a couple of miles away.

"Generally, there would be no one parked there at that time of night," said Hunter. "The officer did spot it during routine patrol early Sunday morning."

"There was an amount of blood found within the vehicle," said Hunter.

The Jefferson County Regional Crime Lab is now analyzing the blood samples.

"To let us know that blood is indeed human blood, and then that DNA will be sent off to the Texas Department of Public Safety for further analysis," said Hunter.

For now, Jasper police continue analyzing the truck, picking up details, looking for leads.

If you have any information about Martin Byerly, call the Jasper Police Department at 384-3471.

Unhappy Re: Martin Byerly

DNA confirms earlier identification of Byerly remains
By CHRISTINE RAPPLEYE
September, 10, 2008

Jasper police said DNA tests results returned this week confirm that a body found earlier this year in Jasper County is that of Martin Byerly.

Police previously had identified the remains as Byerly using items found with him, said Detective Sgt. Mike Poindexter of the Jasper Police Department. He added that forensic identification will help when the case goes to court.

Eric Wade Smith was charged with capital murder in July in connection with the case. He still was in jail Wednesday, Poindexter said.

Byerly went missing Sept. 28, 2007. The 58-year-old mechanic was last seen leaving Jake's Place, a Jasper tavern he'd frequented many times before, according to The Enterprise archives.

Thanks to a tip, skeletal remains were found in an oilfield roughly six miles north of Jasper off U.S. 96. Clothes Byerly was last seen in were found nearby, according to the archives
