The case of a 14-year-old Woburn, Mass. girl who disappeared more than 20 years ago has generated new leads, private detective Michael Garrigan says.
Fox 25 in Boston reported Saturday that Garrigan, who has worked on the case since Melanie Melanson first went missing in Oct. 1989, “was joined by a team of volunteers and the Connecticut Canine Search and Rescue Group as he headed back to the place where Melanie was last seen.”
Melanie was last seen at a high school party in the woods on the outskirts of Woburn, Fox 25 said.
“I developed some leads over the past year, we can’t discuss those at this time, but very credible leads from several sources,” Garrigan told FOX 25.
Cadaver dogs “sniffed out the area in hopes of confirming what Garrigan says he has already discovered and tested before: a trace of human decomposition in the woods,” Fox 25 reported.
Melanie’s parents are deceased, but her aunts and other family members still seek an answer to her disappearance.
According to Fox 25, a revitalized search was launched in 2009, just before what would have been Melanie’s 35th birthday.
“Garrigan says he can’t share many details on the investigation, but says he believes the people he hopes will ultimately be prosecuted were absolutely in the woods on that October night,” Fox 25 said.
