Deputies seek to ID skeleton found in south Ga.

Associated Press - March 8, 2010 5:14 PM ET

CLYO, Ga. (AP) - Sheriff's deputies Effingham County are investigating a human skeleton found in some woods in southern Georgia.

Sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor (eh-SAN-i-poor) says authorities discovered the skeletal remains of an unidentified man Monday after someone called in a tip. The bones were found in woods near Clyo, 35 miles north of Savannah.

Ehsanipoor says an autopsy would be conducted Tuesday to determine the cause of death and the person's identity. He says investigators are treating the death as suspicious and believe the man died more than a year ago.

Because the death happened long ago, Ehsanipoor says investigators don't believe the remains are those of a missing student from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah. Bryce Tarter, who has been missing since Jan. 31, had family in Effingham County.

Skeletal remains found in northern Effingham County
Identification, cause of death pending GBI results
Posted: March 9, 2010 - 12:16am

Unidentified skeletal remains of what officials believe is a man were discovered Monday morning near a field in northern Effingham County, about 13 miles north of Springfield.

Effingham County sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor said deputies discovered the remains about 11:15 a.m. after receiving information from a person whose identity has not been released.

"The person had knowledge of the remains,"
Ehsanipoor said, declining to give other information.

The partially intact skeleton was found in a shallow grave near the edge of a plowed field on Ardmore-Oaky Road. Effingham County sheriff's crime scene investigators and the medical examiner from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation spent most of the day processing the scene.

The remains were to be taken to the GBI crime lab in Savannah this morning for autopsy and identification.

Members of Georgia Forestry also assisted with the investigation Monday, holding a controlled burn of the site to help discover any remaining bones.

Ehsanipoor said investigators also were talking with families of missing persons from the area Monday afternoon.

The body appears to have been at the site for an extended period of time, leading investigators to quickly quash any idea that the remains belong to missing Armstrong Atlantic State University student Bryce Tarter.

"We are confident it is not the body of Tarter," Ehsanipoor said.

Tarter, who is reported to be from Maine but lived in Effingham County, was last seen Jan. 31 at the university's campus in Savannah.

Another high-profile missing persons case with Effingham County ties is that of Robert Mack.

Mack was last seen Sept. 17, 2005, at the Shawnee General Store in Springfield. He was 49 years old at the time of his disappearance and described as a black man, about 6-feet-tall, weighing 190 pounds. He was last seen wearing a green T-shirt and blue jeans.

Effingham County deputies have followed up on a number of leads in Mack's disappearance, including a search with cadaver dogs in December 2008.

That search also took place in the northern section of the county, with the exact location not given. That search also was prompted by a tip.
