Authorities are trying to identify a skeleton found Wednesday afternoon.

The Casa Grande Sheriff's Office was notified of a human skull found in an empty space of land on the edge of city limits.

Upon arrival, detectives found the rest of the skeleton, police said. Some of the skeletal remains were recovered from the surface of the ground; the rest were found in a shallow grave, authorities said.

The age, sex, race, cause of death and the amount of time the person has been dead are all unknown at this time, authorities said.

The Casa Grande Police Department and Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said they currently do not have any missing person reports that correspond with this discovery.
