Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: Alright, listen up, people. Our fugitive has been on the run for ninety minutes. Average foot speed over uneven ground barring injuries is 4 miles-per-hour. That gives us a radius of six miles. What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area. Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles. Your fugitive's name is Dr. Richard Kimble. Go get him. ..... From the movie "The Fugitive"

It doesn't cease being truth just because it offends us.
It doesn't cease being truth if we don't like it
It doesn't cease being truth if we don't believe it.
"Truth is Truth" even if no one likes it or believes it;
We'll all find that out sooner or later whether we like it or not!

..Death investigators say that the number is far too low. Reporting unidentified remains is not mandatory, and many of the nation's approximately 3,000 coroners and medical examiners do not provide information to the center. William Hagmaier, a former FBI criminal profiler who is executive director of the International Homicide Investigators Association, says that California alone has about 2,700 cases, and that New York City buries about 1,000 John and Jane Does each year. Extrapolating from that, and from interviews with coroners and medical examiners, Hagmaier estimates that there are at least 40,000 such cases nationwide.....

The first three girls all disappeared in 1969, in the last two weeks of May.
Ten-year-old Mary Mount, in a pink top and shorts, was last seen chasing her kitten in New Canaan. Dawn Cave, a blond-haired, blue- eyed 14-year-old, stormed out of her Bethany home after a fight with her sister. Diane Toney, 11, wearing a green polka-dot dress, was watching a parade in New Haven.
The fourth girl, the youngest, was taken 16 months later. Five-year-old Jennifer Noon disappeared in September 1970 while walking home from her New Haven school to eat lunch.
Four little girls, all snatched near their homes, all beaten to death with rocks, all dumped in wooded areas. Four killings, three decades old, none of them solved.
At least not as far as the public knows.

Warner was so upset with the tragic and senseless murders that he hung Hoss in effigy outside the restaurant. It was a sentiment that struck a nerve with a lot of people, who applauded Warner’s stance and called for Hoss to receive capital punishment for the crimes.
The bodies were never recovered and Hoss showed no remorse for the killings.

Gearen, a legal secretary, and her 2-year-old daughter, Kyra, were staying with friends at a beach house on Crystal Beach on July 14 when Gearen walked outside a little more than a minute ahead of her friends at 11:56 p.m., Tuttoilmondo said.
The friends heard a gate at the top of the stairs close and she was gone by the time they reached the bottom of the steps.
"It happened in a minute and a half," Tuttoilmondo said. "She just vanished from this earth."
Campers discovered Gearen's body in the surf about 6:30 a.m.
The autopsy showed she had been raped, beaten and strangled, but investigators believe she put up a fight, said sheriff's Lt. Tommy Hansen, the lead investigator.

Janelle and her boyfriend made calls. Hours passed. Stacy's worried parents came over. Friends and relatives flooded the house, discussing what to do next. Eventually the police arrived. In their report police noted that a woman and two teen-age girls were missing. Their purses had been left behind, along with their car keys and cars. It appeared that the two girls had gotten ready for bed -- evidence of washed-off makeup was in the bathroom, and Stacy had folded her shorts and placed them on her shoes beside Suzie's waterbed.
The shorts worried Stacy's mother. Wherever Stacy is, her mother thought, she's in a t-shirt and underwear.
There were no clear signs of a struggle or crime. The state of the house told an incomplete, but troubling, story. The porch globe had been broken. Two slats in the window blinds had been separated, as if someone was looking out.

He passed what he thought was a yellow truck. Then he heard Hammond scream again. "When she screamed at me out the window," he said, "I put it in reverse and started chasing him. " Shafer chased the truck about a mile, he said, racing south on Clinton's 2nd Street, then turning west on Culvert Drive. But his car's transmission failed, Shafer said, and the pickup - maybe a 1969 or 1970 Ford - sped away. The truck may have had a decal of a water scene on the back window. Hammond has not been seen since. Police found her car in the parking lot that night, said Clinton Detective Damon Parsons.

The angel cradles her charge,
gently rocking, while tears stream down her face...
mixing with the silent tears of the child.
The dove quietly sings its grievous song of mourning
for the lost innocence of this precious tot.
There is no peace this night.

Alphonse Bertillon was a file clerk for the French police. He aspired to find a way to identify repeat offenders, even if they tried to use false names. During the late 1870s, as offenders were arrested, he used a tape measure and calipers to take eleven to fourteen seperate measurements, from the length of the foot to the width of the jaw to the distance between the eyes, classifying each person as small, medium, or large and recording the measurements on cards placed in categories. After measuring almost two thousand men, he found a repeat offender he was able to identify by measurements even though the man was using a false identity. The police adopted this method for a short time.

The basic idea of a criminal profile was to acquire a body of information that revealed a common pattern for a general description of an UNSUB (unknown subject) in terms of habit, possible employment, martial status, mental state, and personality traits. Probing for an experiential assessment of a criminal from a series of crime scenes involved a detailed victimology — learning significant facts about the victim's life, especially in the days and hours leading up to his or her death. Their movements were mapped and investigators study all of their personal communications for signals to where they may have crossed paths with a viable suspect..........Hazelwood viewed sex offenders as either impulsive or ritualistic. Impulsive offenders were opportunistic and generally of lower intelligence and economic means, and their sexual behavior often served power or anger needs. Ritualistic offenders, on the other hand, indulged in paraphilias and compulsive behaviors that satisfied a specific psychological need. As they centered their lives around this activity, they learned to lie and manipulate in order to keep it hidden from others and secretly active

The distinction between MO and signature, is in the intent. Actions considered consistent with MO can be linked to one of three intended purposes; 1) to ensure the offender's success in committing the crime; 2) to obscure or otherwise protect the offender from being readily identified or; 3) to facilitate or effect the offender's escape. Actions discovered during an investigation which fall into one or more of these categories can be ascribed as MO.
